Tarun Gogoi was a veteran politician who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016. A member of the Indian National Congress he contributed a lot to the development of Assam. He was also a six-time parliamentarian and a Union minister twice. He led the Congress party to a record three consecutive electoral victories in Assam. He was one of the longest-serving Chief Minister of Assam.
Born on 01 April 1936, Gogoi did his graduation from Jagannath Barooah College and LLB from Gauhati University, Assam. An alumnus of the prestigious Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat, he started his political career as the student association leader at Gauhati University. Before becoming Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi served six terms as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha. He first represented Jorhat in 1971–85. Later Gogoi was elected from Kaliabor. The Kaliabor seat is currently held by his son Gaurav Gogoi. Due to his political acumen and grassroots connection with the people of Assam he held many important posts in party organization also.
Gogoi was Joint Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in 1976 under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Later he served as General Secretary of the AICC (1985–90) under Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. In the P. V. Narasimha Rao government he served as the Union Minister of State in the Food and Food Processing Industry departments (1991–96). However, it was his role as a Chief Minister of Assam which brought his applause due to much developmental work undertaken by his government. A Congress stalwart Tarun Gogoi was elected Chief Minister of Assam in 2001. He led the party to a record three consecutive electoral victories in Assam. He was one of the longest-serving Chief Minister of Assam.
Illness and death
Tarun Gogoi passed away on 23rd November in Guwahati. The octogenarian Congress leader was undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital for post-Covid complications. He was 86. Many including President Ramnath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death of a popular leader and a veteran administrator.
President of India: Extremely sad to know of the demise of Shri Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister of Assam. The country has lost a veteran leader with rich political and administrative experience. His long tenure in office was a period of epochal change in Assam.
He will always be remembered for the development of Assam and especially towards his efforts to improve law and order and fighting insurgency in the state. His passing away marks the end of an era. In this hour of grief, condolences to his family, friends and supporters.

Tarun Gogoi is survived by his wife Dolly Gogoi and children Chandrima and Gaurav Gogoi.
